More Than Rescue: Soul Dog’s Impact and Thrift Shop in Englewood

By Beth Marketos, Macaroni KID Englewood-Greenwood Village-Centennial Publisher, Macaroni KID Highlands Ranch-Parker-Castle Rock-Lone Tree Co-Manager, Macaroni KID Denver Assistant Publisher April 8, 2025

Two years ago, we met a furry little girl who would change our lives - a sweet, sassy, yellow eyed, brown tabby we named Sylvee (formerly Noreen IL). We found her at a PetSmart adoption event, hosted by Soul Dog Rescue. We had heard of Soul Dog Rescue before but always associated it with dogs - so it was a surprise to learn they rescue cats, too!

While chatting with the wonderful volunteers at the event, we learned that Soul Dog Rescue is much more than a typical shelter. Based out of Fort Lupton, Colorado, their mission has a broad reach. Volunteers frequently travel to Native American reservations to provide free and low-cost spay/neuter services and raise awareness about the importance of controlling animal populations. Their work not only helps reduce suffering but fosters lasting change in communities often underserved by traditional animal welfare services.

Up until yesterday, I assumed Soul Dog was mainly a rescue organization. But after a friend shared a link to their Facebook page, I discovered that Soul Dog Rescue also runs a hidden gem in Englewood - The Soul Dog Rescue & Humane Society Thrift Store. This cozy shop, just under 700 square feet, maybe small but it has a big impact. Offering great prices on a carefully curated selection of merchandise, the thrift store serves everyone, regardless of ability to pay. The store is also a resource for individuals facing homelessness or financial hardship in Englewood, and the proceeds help fund Soul Dog’s vital transport and rescue operations.

Shoppers can browse aisles filled with gently used clothing, home goods, furniture, and even a treasure trove of pet supplies: collars, leashes, pet beds, bowls, toys, and more, all at unbeatable prices. They also sell their popular rescue t-shirts in an array of colors and sizes. With a friendly staff, clean layout, and ever-changing inventory, the store has become a favorite spot for bargain hunters and animal lovers alike.

Thinking of donating? Soul Dog gratefully accepts:

  • Gently used, clean clothing (men’s and women’s)
  • Small furniture (dressers, shelving, end tables)
  • House décor, kitchenware, knick-knacks
  • DVDs, Blu-rays, and camping/outdoor gear
  • Cash donations via PayPal

Items they cannot accept include:

  • VHS tapes, tube TVs, old electronics
  • Sofas, mattresses, and baby equipment
  • Old books, magazines, encyclopedias
  • Chipped, broken, or cracked items

Soul Dog is truly a community-driven rescue, fueled by compassion, dedication, and a deep commitment to helping animals and humans alike. We’re forever grateful to them for bringing Sylvee into our lives, and for the important work they continue to do, everyday!
